Title: Appeal to the Base
Cartoon #1
Tone of the cartoon:
1) positive or negative framing of the issue (circle or highlight answer)
2) framing is supportive of or opposed to supporters (Circle or highlight answer)
3) framing is supportive of or opposed to opponents (Circle or highlight answer)
What is the Action Taking Place?
In this cartoon we can see Hillary talking about a political issue when what seems to be her campaign manager (or some sort of political consultant) lean in and tell Hillary that she needs to do something in order to get the base to be more excited. The next scene shows Hillary putting a Bill Clinton mask in front of her own. Another symbol shown in the cartoon his Hillary’s campaign logo with the H and and arrow going through it emphasizing her ability to move the country in a progressive or positive direction
The cartoon is depicting Hillary Clinton as riding the coattails of her husband, Bill. There are many who would describe Bill’s presidency as a successful one, besides the Monica Lewinski scandal. The cartoon is eluding to most of Hillary’s supporters being former supporters of Bill and that without him she would not be this far in the race
What is the Context and Analysis?
This cartoon is an assumption that Hillary often uses Her husband, Bill Clinton, to help her chances in the primary elections. The cartoonist seems to be saying that Hillary lacks the charisma to draw in supporters so she leans on her husband who had a decently successful presidency. The Illustrator's depiction of Hillary at the podium seems to frame her in a negative way by emphasizing her lack enthusiasm with the way she seem to be scowling while delivering an underwhelming speech that lacks detail. The cartoonist is hinting at Hillary’s deployment of her husband on the campaign trail to speak to crowds, resonating with democrats’ admiration with the former president who is still held in high esteem in most democratic circles. The cartoonist could also be playing on the irony of Hillary’s campaign symbol, the H with an arrow through it. It is supposed to be viewed as Hillary making America progressive, but using a man to help win the campaign largely based on being a first woman president seems to slightly harmful to the message Hillary is bringing.

What is the Action Taking Place?
The Cartoon is of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton wearing hats with Donald Trump’s reading his campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” and Hillary’s reading “Because I’m a Woman and You Owe Me”. The cartoonist (obviously conservative) depicts Hillary as haggard and with a look of reproachfulness, adding to the “You owe me” effect.
It seems that the cartoon is saying that Trump would be the better candidate and Hillary’s campaign is running a sexist one in which she is trying to sway the voters decision solely based on her being a woman.
What is the Context and Analysis?
No doubt the work of a conservative trump supporter, this political cartoon is pointing out without subtlety that Hillary’s campaign is based on her being a woman. The artist frames Hillary as a haggard, reproachful woman who seems to say exactly what is written on the cap she wears. Donald Trump’s features are not quite as offensive as Hillary’s (even though trump looks just as haggard in real life. Although the primaries are yet to be determined, the cartoon is comparing GOP front runner’s, Donald Trump, campaign basis versus the Democratic front runner’s. Writing it out in plain letters, the artist’s intentions are clear as day and that is to discredit Clinton as a candidate by claiming her campaign is based on her playing the gender card.

What is the Action Taking Place?
In this Cartoon is shows the republican elephant nudging what the cartoonist represents as the women of the United States (drew a person in a dress and heels) with a caption that says “ get a load of the next token minority the Dems are going with!”
The cartoonist is playing on the Republicans view of HIllary being another minority candidate like Barack Obama. What the Republicans do not realize (in the context of the cartoon) is that she is not really a minority as women make up 51 percent of the U.S. population.

What is the Context and Analysis?
This cartoon, from Salt Lake City’s very own Pat Bagely, is depicting the Republican elephant overlooking the role that women could play in the upcoming election. The elephant arrogantly nudges a woman with a caption that says “Get a load of the next token minority the dems are going with!” Written on the woman is “51% of the U.S.” In 2008 Barack Obama was the first minority to be elected into the Oval office, and he was a true minority with African Americans representing less of the United States than caucasian citizens. The cartoonists is playing on republican views of men being more dominant by having the elephant claim that women are a minority even though they represent 51 percent of Americans. The artists seem to be implying that the republicans think that they have the race wrapped up already with the democrats putting forth a woman candidate.

What is the Action Taking Place?
The cartoon is showing Hillary bringing a lot of baggage with her en route to her 2016 presidential campaign. On the baggage that she is bringing with her there are different bags labeled with some of the blunders she’s gone through and some of the things she has/had going on with her.
The reality being constructed in this cartoon is that Hillary has a lot of things in the past that she’s bringing with her on her campaign trail. This seems to be a play on her being a woman also because this seems to be a social norm that is played on by television shows and movies.
What is the Context and Analysis?
In this cartoon it is playing on the fact that Hillary is a woman and that she has had a lot of stuff in the past happen to her that could stir things up in her race for the 2016 presidency. It plays on Hillary being a woman because it seems to be a social norm for women pack heavily when traveling. The artist cleverly describes all the stuff that she is bringing along on her campaign trail as all the baggage that is coming along with her from her past experiences. Some of the bags are labeled such as her involvement in the Benghazi fiasco, her attempt at creating health care for all nicknamed HillaryCare, and her husband’s impeachment following his lying under oath about his affair with Monica Lewinski.
